Golden Blooms | 100 year old Oak! | Support the Canyon

Monkeyflower in the Canyon As you drive up Claremont Canyon near Signpost 29, keep an eye out for blooming monkeyflower growing on the Chert Wall!  Board member Nancy Mueller shares that "the whole, southern flank of the canyon is glorious with golden monkey flower (Diplacus aurantiacus) at this time of the year". (Photos: by Ruby J Soto Cardona (left) and by Nancy Mueller (right)) If you're interested in how the Chert Wall came to be, you can read more about it on our blog here.  Signpost 29 stewardship efforts The heritage oak, what was possibly the largest oak on the Willow Trail, age estimated to around 100 years, was infected with SOD and had to be felled. The removal of this great giant changed the microclimate of this part of the trail, allowing for invasive plant species to overcrowd and inhibit native plant expansion. Contact us at info@claremontcanyon.org for any questions or to sign up. Restore native wild habitat  The Garber Park Stewards continue restoration in the park to allow native plants to thrive. Two returning volunteers uncage a buckeye to give it more space to grow and create more habitat for other species - one of many volunteer activities carried out in the park. (Photo: Wyllie Clayson) Join and Support the Garber Park Stewards  Volunteer - Meet every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month from 9am-noon. Adopt a Spot! - Volunteer on a different day and time by yourself, with friends and/or family, or bring your local group. Contact the GPStewards at gpstewards@gmail.com to sign up. Become a Garber Contributor - Donate to the Garber Park Fund to help support new projects and build on previous successes. All levels are welcome! Wear sturdy shoes, dress in layers and bring your favorite water bottle. Tools are provided.  Garber Park Stewards Saturday, August 5th and 19th  9 a.m.-Noon  Visit this 13-acre park and help restore its native wild habitat (we meet year-round). Signpost 29 Saturday, August 26th 10 a.m.-Noon  Join us at Signpost 29 for a day of restoration (1.5 miles up Claremont from the intersection of Ashby/Tunnel Rd.) as we work to restore and maintain pathways, remove invasive broom and collect litter.
